Gondwana Rainforest Trust works with a range of organisations that align with our cause and help ensure we are impactful, achieving meaningful conservation outcomes and working toward a vision of a rewilded Daintree rainforest back to a pristine ecological system managed by its rightful owners. We work very closely with our strategic partners to ensure that we design and deliver conservation programs efficiently and that we reach a diverse range of people to provide them with as many opportunities to support our cause as possible.

Together with our partners, we are furthering globally significant conservation causes and reconnecting people with Traditional Land.

Saving the Daintree, one block at a time

Every Daintree rainforest property Gondwana Rainforest Trust purchases for conservation is protected forever and sparks the process for it to be considered for inclusion in the Daintree National Park (CYPAL). We call this our Pathway to Protection. This program is the only formalised, non-government program that purchases land for conservation so it can be owned and managed by Traditional Owners. The Pathway to Protection has been made possible through an agreement between Gondwana Rainforest Trust, Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation, the Queensland Government and the Wet Tropics Management Authority.

This process allows for properties purchased under its Save The Daintree Program to be proposed for inclusion in the Daintree National Park (CYPAL) so they can be jointly managed and protected under the Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992 (NCA). Properties can also be considered for protection under a Conservation Agreement (Special Wildlife Reserve or Nature Refuge), another class of protected area under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (NCA).

With support from Traditional Owners, the state is also converting existing national parks, to be jointly managed with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service as national parks under the CYPAL agreement, with Aboriginal freehold as the underlying tenure.

The achievements of this program were acknowledged in the 2021 Queensland Reconciliation Awards, receiving the Partnership Award and the Premier's Choice Award. The Save the Daintree program and our partnerships are built on respect, care and the shared values of protecting the Daintree’s globally significant conservation and cultural values while also reconnecting people with Traditional Land.
